Alonzo Abasi was born in Liberia on April 16, 1985. His mum is Liberian, his father Sierra Leonean, making Alonzo a ‘Sierra Berian’, since he has always kept his connection to both countries. He grew up with his grandmother in Freetown, Sierra Leone, where he went through his primary and secondary education. During his primary school days Alonzo liked music, but his real love for music was born when he was in secondary school watching his brother Benjamin practicing with Sierra Leone music star Emmerson. When Benjamin noticed his younger brother’s love for the art, he started writing lyrics for Alonzo. That ignited the flame of passion for music for Alonzo. When he was barely thirteen years old, he wrote his own lyrics.

LIBERIA
In 2000, he moved to Liberia. Determined to become a superstar, Alonzo could always be found singing at talent shows and church choirs.  In 2003, he participated in a competition organized by the US Embassy in Monrovia to do an awareness song on HIV/AIDS. He won the competition. It marked a turning point in his career. The US Embassy sponsored him to record his first song ever at a professional recording studio in Monrovia. When he entered the studio he knew he had found his destination. This is where he wanted to be.

He moved to Nigeria in 2004 to continue with higher education at the National Institute of Information Technology (NIIT) in Lagos. He used the allowances his late father sent him for his studies, to book studio sessions. Before the end of his course, Alonzo had recorded 18 songs. He returned to Liberia and released his first single “Innocent”. “Innocent” spread over Liberia like a wild fire. The song got him many musical awards and instant recognition as a musician. Alonzo released other songs, like  “Letter to the President” and “Liberian Angel”. He soon became a household name in Liberia. Although he was just in the early stages of his career, he put a significant mark on contemporary Liberian music. His soul touching lyrics got people glued to their radio every time his songs are being played, and girls screaming out loud whenever he is on stage.

SIERRA LEONE
Alonzo returned to Sierra Leone in 2007. His cousin DJ SONY introduced him to the Managing Director of Kallboxx Records Abu-Bakr Konteh aka DJ BOXX. When BOXX heard Alonzo’s talent, he wasted no time to offer Alonzo a deal to record an album with Kallboxx Records. Alonzo worked with producer Sound Boy Richie on his first album “Africa Unite”. In the same year he released the single “Angel” that instantly put him at the top of Sierra Leone’s music scene. The song literally took over Sierra Leone for almost a year. The song was number one in every respect. Clubs kept playing the song over and over and it seemed as though everybody in Sierra Leone had installed the song as a ringing tone on their mobile phone. Angel was a number one hit in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Gambia, Guinea and Togo. The song even reached Canada were it was played by CKLN Radio.

After “Africa Unite” came “My Music” and many more successes. Alonzo  was the first and only Sierra Leonean artist to perform at the MTV Awards (Kenya, 2009). The single “Africa Unite”  was voted African Song of the Year 2007 on the BBC. He was awarded the titles Best Reggae Artist by SLMTV in the USA, Best RnB Artist in Sierra Leone, Angel was song of the year 2007 in Sierra Leone, and in 2009 he won the title Best Male Artist for the Young Achievers Awards in the UK. Only 4 years after the release of his first album, Alonzo is already called the RnB and Reggae sensation of West Africa. And Alonzo has more in store. He is working on a new album,  ready and eager to conquer the rest of the world.
